How my ADHD Brain Works

Updated: Aug 18, 2023

Can I become more organised now I know how my brain works?

👇

Our neuropaths only link up when we have dopamine. That's the big difference. Neurotypicals can choose to link them up because they can do that. Ours do not link if boring. When linked, we can find hacks, alarms, tricks, the scaffolding, to help our brain to do the stuff. We have the linkage to solve those boring problems and everything is smoother.

Because the hacks are then set up, we are a bit better when not stimulated (when the brain is not linked) because the planning of it all has already been done and is ready for us.

But no hacks and no stimulants and we are lost again.

Add to the equation that we bore easily. So we may get bored of the hack that previously worked and so the hack stops working.

I also mean natural stimulants, all the natural things that aid focus, lifestyle choices, exercise etc. Not just meds. Not everyone is ok with meds. It's a personal choice.

It IS confusing to know what helps.

The meds and hacks and lifestyle choices (that may increase attention) are different for each of us. Meds do not work for everyone. Different types of stims work for different folk, we each have a unique ADHD profile so I might struggle with something a little and you struggle with that thing a lot. The impact of stimulants/lifestyle etc will vary depending on how big an issue something is and personality matters too.

Add menopause and hormones. Add life privileges and you can see there is no simple rule as to what helps.

Environment matters. I'm surrounded by people who 'get me' and am in a job that plays into my ADHD strengths. If I worked a dull (to me) job and had criticism around me, ALL my ADHD symptoms would be exaggerated. I can guarantee that of me.

Add the impact of mental health issues either as a consequence of ADHD life struggles or co-morbid. Add life stress.

You will not change your Brain to be Neurotypical. But there is ALOT that can have an impact on how difficult our ADHD affects us and how much management is personally possible.

And. We can be Awesome. Other posts about that!
