I responded to a peer asking for a good Metaphor for the ADHD Brain, something that allows others to truly understand and empathise (but not pity) us.

This is what I came up with.

My ADHD Brain is like an Orchestra with MANY members/musicians/instruments.

A non ADHDer is a Soloist.

When I have a thought or emotion, the whole damn Orchestra is involved/responsive. Clanging and loudness and misalignment. My reactions are big and quick with no order, no warning. the 100 pieces respond at the same time, in a non linear way.

A non ADHDer is 1 person with a triangle. 1 triangle is so easy to manage.

Here is the ND affirming bit: now I understand my brain is an Orchestra, I recognise the lack of simplicity, I have self awareness and acceptance that the 100 pieces are merely doing their job, I do not have to compare myself to a Soloist anymore. I no longer have shame in comparing others' order with my clatter.

I realise that each and every part of my brain has a purpose and need and yes, it is often chaos, it is paralysing, and it is also magnificent and beautiful. It is both.

When I, as the Conductor, am supported, when I understand all the instruments and when I have spoons/energy to perform, it is magical.

Then I am a Conductor in tune with my surroundings, observing the rhythm and mood and big picture whilst also responding to the singular notes and tiny detail.

When tired, or overwhelmed, when unfamiliar and unprepared, when forced to play something I hate or am bored, I am paralysed and every note hurts and grates me, the Orchestra is bored, waiting, searching for better music, disbanded or there is pandemonium.

My brain is exhausting and also a masterpiece. I can be both paralysed and silent or melodic and stunning.

This is my ADHD Brain. Different not disordered.

You are welcome.

Picture of the Sea, Hele Bay, UK. My flip flops on my feet, with the waves in the distance, on a sunny evening with a blue sky. The sea is my happy place, it reminds me of an Orchestra with the movement, sounds, in synce playing the most beautiful piece in natural harmony with the ocean.
